Is Sarah Wooduff mentally unbalanced?

I don't understand her. For instance, when confronted with her lie about the Fr. Lt., she is at a loss to explain herself. A case of a susceptible man who meets a mentally unwell woman? I would have run for the hills.

I do in fact think Sarah is mentally unbalanced. The effect she has on Charles makes for an event filled story, but in my opinion, the major mystery in the story is one of psychiatric illness, and in that sense I don't find the story to be very satisfying.
